The Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum fills one of Stowe’s most historic buildings, the 1818 Old Town Hall, at the center of the village. Its collection holds thousands of pieces, from wooden skis and vintage lift chairs to decades of ski fashion, some of which has somehow come back in style. The museum also honors the 10th Mountain Division, the World War II ski troops whose veterans went on to build and run many of the country’s ski areas after the war. The Vermont Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame celebrates the athletes and pioneers who put Vermont on the map, including Olympic champions and snowboarding pioneer Jake Burton. Exhibits change every year, so even return visitors find something new to explore.
The museum is about 10 minutes from Topnotch on Main Street in Stowe village, which makes it an easy stop before dinner or a good way to spend a snowy afternoon off the slopes. Check the museum’s website for current exhibits, hours, and the Red Bench Speaker Series, which brings talks and films to the museum from fall through spring. Then head back to Topnotch and settle the debate over whose first pair of skis belongs in a museum.
