A Local's Guide to Hiking in Stowe

A Local’s Guide to Hiking in Stowe

Nothing says “Vermont Summer” quite like a walk in the woods. The trees are full and green, the air is breezy and clear, and the views are unbeatable. There’s a trek for everyone here in Stowe, regardless of your skill level and experience. Explore Stowe’s trails with this guide to our favorite hikes.

Moss Glen Falls

This easy hike allows you to choose your adventure, with Vermont’s tallest waterfall just a little more than half of a mile away from the trailhead. Hikers who are feeling adventurous can continue past Moss Glen Falls, completing a 4.2 mile out and back trail that takes a total of 2-3 hours.

Wiessner Woods

Just down the road from Topnotch is a 2.8 mile trail system through picturesque trees and meadows. Plenty of wildlife, small natural pools, and an old sugarhouse are just a few of the sights you’ll see on this easy loop - and if you’re feeling extra lucky, you just might see the Gnome of Wiessner Woods, too.

Bingham Falls

Bingham Falls

A slightly more challenging hike, this half-mile trail begins with a gradual downward slope, branching off into two paths. The left side takes hikers to the upper gorge along the river, while the trail to the right leads to the main attraction: a stunning 40-foot waterfall. This trail is recommended for more experienced hikers due to the slippery rocks and limited fencing near the falls. Be sure to wear proper footwear and exercise caution near the water.

Sunset Rock

Accessed from Stowe’s historic village, this mile-long easy hike starts at the end of Sunset Street. After a short (about 200 yards) but steep ascent to Sunset Rock, take a break and enjoy the aerial view of the village, then continue on to the Glacial Kettle Hole and Upper Overlook with incredible views of Mount Mansfield. Be sure to park behind the Stowe Community Church or on Main Street, as Sunset Street does not allow visitor parking.

Stowe Pinnacle

A favorite of locals and visitors alike, this moderate hike travels 3.6 miles, gaining 1,520’ of elevation on the way. Hikers must scale rocks and navigate the steep trail to the top, where Mount Mansfield, Camel’s Hump, Worcester Range, and the Sterling Range can all be seen. For a slightly shorter hike, start from the Pinnacle Meadows and intersect the Stowe Pinnacle Trail - but be sure to follow the same path down! Parking for the Pinnacle Meadows trail is a good distance away from the start of the Stowe Pinnacle Trail.

Sterling Pond

Sterling Pond

This half-day hike is a favorite out of all of the trails in Smugglers’ Notch. Considered to be a moderately challenging hike due to steep inclines, the views are well worth the climb. Hike out to see the infamous Sterling Pond or continue on the Long Trail North to Smugglers’ Notch Resort’s Madonna Chairlift, or Spruce Peak’s Sensation Chairlift on the Long Trail South for spectacular mountain views.

Hell Brook Trail

One of the most challenging hikes around Stowe, this full-day hike is perfect for expert hikers looking for a thrill. The panoramic views at the top of Mount Mansfield are the reward after a day of ascending slick, steep, rock faces, gaining 2,800’ in elevation over 5.1 miles and taking about 5 hours. The trail can be taken to the historic Taft Lodge, the oldest shelter on the Long Trail, or towards the Adam’s Apple of Mansfield. Those who opt to head towards the Adam’s Apple will see the Lake of Clouds, one of Vermont’s highest-elevation bodies of water.

The nose of Mount Mansfield

Haselton Trail

Pack a lunch for this 6-hour hike perfect for experienced hikers looking for a full-day of traversing a rocky trail through streams, forests, and ski trails. The Haselton Trail itself is fairly moderate, but leads to difficult trails that ascend Mount Mansfield’s chin. Hikers must navigate steep rock faces, tight squeezes between rock walls, ladders, and metal grips along steep cliff edges.
