Have a Chic Weekend in Vermont’s Classiest Mountain Town
You hear about people traveling to Vermont to get to the mountains. You imagine a rocking chair on a screened-in porch overlooking a crystalline lake. You wonder how far into the woods you’ll have to wander to see a white tailed deer or maybe a moose. So, if you’re one who can’t stand the idea of swapping your heels for a pair of hiking boots – even for a weekend – you definitely think Vermont’s the place for you, um, to stay away from. But here’s the deal: you don’t have to put away your pumps. You can still come to the Vermont mountains to enjoy the view, and at the same time, enjoy the scene. Where to do it? Stowe. A small Vermont town with an amazingly cosmopolitan vibe. Here’s how to get your chic fix in a quick – or relaxed – weekend. Mix and match as you prefer, of course. It is your weekend in Vermont, after all.
Drink a cocktail by the pool. There is something so luxurious about finding a cozy chaise and ordering up a pomegranate martini to be delivered to you poolside. No, you will not see the Pacific from behind your shades, but Mount Mansfield is a different kind of natural beauty.
Get a facial. And, honestly, while you’re at it, get a mani/pedi (treat yourself to a paraffin dip for both), and a massage… or two. This is the minimum in a posh Stowe weekend. No explanation needed.
Take a yoga or Pilates class. Staying fit is so en vogue. Pick and choose from countless Stowe studios and class offerings. Just put on your cutest active wear, splurge on some fancy bottled water, and voila!
Make a reservation. Chef-owned, farm-to-table, slow-food, gastro-pub… whichever foodie fad is your favorite, you’ll have plenty of choice in Stowe for a fine dinner. It is Vermont, so casual is cool, but dressing up is hot! And, doesn’t food just taste better the more primped you are?!
Have a happy hour. Actually, have many happy hours – ha! But, before you head to your fancy dinner, hit a different hot spot for a beverage, light snack, and some early evening personality – think après ski without the ski, or the ski gear.
Buy art. Check out the scene at a local gallery (Stowe has at least a dozen of them), and definitely hit an opening reception. Chat with the artist and enthusiasts, and if inspired, splurge on the ultimate souvenir… a limited edition print, or maybe even an original.
See a show. Whether the bill calls for an off-broadway theatrical production, a traveling dance troupe, or a national music act, is not really important. The intimate environment, and quality architecture of Stowe’s Spruce Peak Performing Arts Center, promises a well-orchestrated evening leaving you feeling privileged.
Put on your sweetest bikini. And your floppiest sunhat, and your fanciest sunglasses, and go paddleboarding like a celebrity. That’s what those Vermont lakes are for, after-all.
Order up some bubbly. Pair it with chocolate dipped strawberries, and an end-of-the-day soak in an outdoor Jacuzzi. Look for shooting stars in the Vermont night sky, and constellations you’ve maybe only read about.
Indulge in luxury linens. Open a window for a fresh Vermont breeze, and sweet dreams.
Awake refreshed. Start your day with a morning dip in the pool as the fog lifts to reveal the mountain summits. Then, wrap yourself in a lush bathrobe and enjoy a Cappuccino, and croissant in a cozy chair on an outdoor patio, as you scheme up your own inspired activity for the day.
Oh, and one more [big] thing. Shop. Seriously, Stowe has more than 70 shops. They’re boutique-y and independently owned, but not back-woodsy general store types. You’ll recognize designers and brands, and possibly get hooked on some new ones that your friends back home have never heard of.
Do not miss Well Heeled (wellheeledstowe.com), no hiking boots here! Set in an old farmhouse with an attached barn, somehow the setting is perfect for the surprisingly sophisticated array of shoes, clothing and accessories.
